Cutting the Federal Budget to “Restore America”

Republican Presidential hopeful Ron Paul recently unveiled his “Plan To Restore America.” (PDF) The 11 page plan includes his proposed budget that among other things; cuts $1 trillion in spending during the first year, eliminates five cabinet departments (Energy, HUD, Commerce, Interior, and Education), abolishes the Transportation Security Administration and returns responsibility for security to private property owners, abolishes corporate subsidies, stops foreign aid, ends foreign wars, and returns most other spending to 2006 levels ($2.7 trillion). Paul’s proposed spending cuts also include a “10% reduction in the federal workforce, slashes Congressional pay and perks, and curbs excessive federal travel.”

If elected, “President Paul will take a salary of $39,336, approximately equal to the median personal income of the American worker.”

Paul’s plan also, “[l]owers the corporate tax rate to 15%, making America competitive in the global market. Allows American companies to repatriate capital without additional taxation, spurring trillions in new investment. Extends all Bush tax cuts. Abolishes the Death Tax. Ends taxes on personal savings, allowing families to build a nest egg.”

Additionally, the plan “Repeals ObamaCare, Dodd-Frank, and Sarbanes-Oxley. Mandates REINS-style requirements for thorough congressional review and authorization before implementing any new regulations issued by bureaucrats. President Paul will also cancel all onerous regulations previously issued by Executive Order.”

Additionally, Paul would audit the Federal Reserve and implement competing currency legislation to strengthen the dollar and stabilize/curb inflation.

While this plan, from a libertarian perspective, is better than anything proposed by anyone else in either major party, it falls short of my expectations. In addition to the cuts proposed, I would prefer to see a plan that eliminates the postal monopoly, and abolishes Homeland Security, the DEA, EPA, IRS & Federal Reserve (for starters) with spending cuts to at least 1998 levels ($1.7 trillion). I would also like to see a plan that requires Congress to read each piece of legislation before it is allowed to be brought up for a vote and also requires that legislation cite Constitutional authority for such action being proposed.

However, I realize that in politics one must be willing to compromise. And if I were only being offered the choice between Ron Paul’s “Plan To Restore America” or any plan advocated by any other Presidential candidate from the Republicratic Duopoly; I would choose the “Plan to Restore America.”

  1. The day of reckoning restoral is coming, and the longer we wait, the more it’s going to feel like the shock therapy that Russia went through after communism was unraveled.

With the mob in the street, you have to draw blood on these phonies in the debates though, and Paul has been reticent to step up and lay the verbal smackdown on the 999 and 59-point plans that are failing cursory economic policy analysis by actual economists.

The problem is the media thinks their job is to put a crown on a king’s head, similar to how the church used to do things. The reality is the media’s job is to simply report the news, not manufacture it.

  2. He needs to not confuse people at this point, focus the message on cutting the military empire abroad, coupled with cutting the police state at home. Put the military on the border where they belong and send all the drug warriors, guitar warriors, raw milk warriors and lemonade warriors (what have you) into a new occupation.

    1. there is no “military empire” that exists anymore my confused and misguided friend…..do some research on some real empires and you’ll realize we’re not even close…..the police state you are absolutely right about, and orwell is laughing his ass off because he tried to warn us almost a hundred years ago…we don’t need our military on the border, the fucking government should be enforcing their own laws, and if they don’t the states will take care of it, and they should leave the states alone if they decide to enforce the laws that previous american presidents (especially Ummbama) were too pussy to enforce

  3. Ron Paul’s budget is the only plan with an honest cut.  $1 trillion is nothing, compared to the entire economy, and the jobs will not be lost immediately.  People retire and quit.  This is where the majority, if not all of the government employee cuts will come.  We are broke, and it is not right to ask our grandchildren to pay for us to have less liberty and more authoritarian wars.

  4. 9-9-9 would raise taxes on the poor and middle class.  It is very dangerous.  It makes it easy for Congress to move in and raise the values to any values M-N-P down the road, especially after 2 years.  There is nothing that can prevent an eventual 21-21-21.   Paul’s is more like a 15-0-0.  no taxes on personal income!  More liberty and more people freed right here without utilizing a single drone that may kill innocents or not.

  5. Yes, I would like to see even more liberty too!  Any candidate who has any chance and want to up the liberty value, then you can count me in.  Ron Paul 2012 this time.

  6. drones have nothing to do with this, and they serve a great purpose so we can fuck up the assholes with laundry on their heads without sacrificing american lives…..more government spending is a bad thing, period, and Ummbama is the master of that……..no actual solutions, just rhetoric, then he blames congress for not passing his atrocious jobs plan, which he doesn’t even know how to pay for, when congress (especially the good guys in the tea party) have offered numerous bills to the democratic controlled senate, which they have thoroughly trounced upon because they are VOTING ON PARTY LINES LIKE THE MISGUIDED LIBERALS THEY ARE….the government needs to get out of the business of being a business and be a government instead, and the liberal controlled media needs to get it’s head out of it’s ass and realize that Ummbama is not the savior you thought he was, he’s a radical progressive with a social agenda, and he surrounded himself with other radicals to get elected (who are now turning on him, like van jones, bill ayers, frances fox-piven. all disturbingly violent and radical wackos)…..we don’t need more social policies, we need to cut spending, reduce the size of government, and get the radical social agenda out of the white house, because amateur hour is over for Ummbama……fuckin fags
