Feedburner is not a very good metric for site health

I’m not sure why, but Hammer of Truth and earsucker (our sister entertainment only site) both have dismal Feedburner subscriber stats. In fact, HoT’s subscriber count has actually been HIGHER than earsucker’s recently until some magic voodoo spell was cast, which dropped us from our high of 477 just a week ago to 240 today (at this rate of seemingly random pops and drops, I predict we will have either 1K or -780 readers by next month). Earsucker’s feedburner chicklet fares slightly better… but doesn’t come close to legitimately showing that in fact the site gets more than 13K visits a day.

Yes, I know Feedburner fluctuates, but damn… something is clearly amiss in using it as a metric for any kind of boasting purposes. In another few months, the number of HoT facebook LIKES will probably surpass our total number of RSS readers (and facebook doesn’t play well with reporting this number to feedburner, neither does twitter for that matter). Not to mention that Bloglines (where we have ~45 readers) is about to implode on itself October 1st thanks to Ask.com not knowing how to make money or whatever their stupid ass excuse is.

Which begs the question: if feed stats are becoming worthless… how do you guys feel about us yanking the counter and putting something less WRONG up there? I can promise whatever it is that it won’t be a LIE.

I've published HoT along with about 300+ friends since 2002. We're all Americans who are snarky and love our country. I'm a libertarian that registered Republican because I like to win elections. That's pretty much it.

    1. Considering earsucker bankrolls the HoT experiment, I have no choice but to give in to your demands :)
