The Technical Difficulties are Over

My apologies to everyone who came to the site a couple days ago and got a terribly evil “301 Access Forbidden” message. Apparently our host is so awesome that if our load ever spikes, they just suspend the site and wash their hands. Unfortunately, this also ended up hosing the .htaccess file which is why the number of RSS subscribers is waaaaay down at the moment (I redirect to FeedBurner). Michael Hampton can vouch that these guys act kinda cruddy sometimes, but are otherwise good hosts, so I’m not naming names.

The big issue though was that this couldn’t have happened at a worse time for me, as I was in the midst of moving across town Monday and Tuesday and couldn’t do anything except beg another editor here to open a work ticket with our host to turn the site back on.

As for me, I’m still catching up with everything (the Peirce for Ohio campaign is blowing up, yo) and setting up home in the new place at the moment, so bear with me through these annoyances.

I've published HoT along with about 300+ friends since 2002. We're all Americans who are snarky and love our country. I'm a libertarian that registered Republican because I like to win elections. That's pretty much it.

  1. SVD — all is forgiven! Now give us our LibertyMix!!!

I was wondering what that was all about, when the error message popped up. Be glad I didn’t have an e-mail addy to send to… paranoia makes one think mean, unkind thoughts.

    Strike that. *I’M* glad I didn’t have one. Would’ve estranged y’all.

  2. Just now finished a migration myself. I’m waiting for the server to reboot right this moment. I know what it’s like! You have my sympathy.

  3. Stephen, I’ve sent you a private note with my recommendation on a dedicated server, which I moved myself to a few months ago, as well as some performance hints. :)

As for your current host, they never suspended my account, but that’s because I moved just before getting big enough to run that risk. :)

  4. The site’s source code still reads: “6/5/06 losing code to an overwrite sucks balls… we’ll be up within the day”
