House Majority Speaker Dennis HastertYou know how Majority House Speaker Dennis Hastert was all up in the Justice Department’s grill about that FBI raid… calling it unconstitutional and all that jazz? Well it turns out he wasn’t just looking out for his fellow Congressional brethren, he was trying to shield his own ass according to ABC News:

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dennis Hastert, is under investigation by the FBI, which is seeking to determine his role in an ongoing public corruption probe into members of Congress, ABC News has learned from high level government sources.

But what’s interesting is that the Justice Department totally denies it (yo, what’s up ABC… leave the making shit up schtick to bloggers):

The Justice Department denied a news report Wednesday that it was investigating House Speaker Dennis Hastert.

The statement by department spokeswoman Tasia Scolinos came in response to a report by ABC News that Hastert was under investigation by the FBI to determine his role in a public corruption probe centered around convicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff.

But hey… you still have to wonder how that $100,000 from Abramoff is going to play out, considering it’s easy to see through the veneer and point out the potential ethics issues swirling beneath:

Between 2001 and 2004, Hastert collected more than $100,000 in donations from Abramoff’s firm and tribal clients. He also had used Abramoff’s restaurant to hold fundraisers.

Either way, it seems Hastert is protesting just a little too loudly for someone who’s completely innocent (hint: it’s not the first time he’s gotten caught).

I've published HoT along with about 300+ friends since 2002. We're all Americans who are snarky and love our country. I'm a libertarian that registered Republican because I like to win elections. That's pretty much it.

  1. Alright LP it is time we get our shit together.
I have been reading about this story all over the web and comments everywhere are about needing a third party. Watching CNN the other night they where talking about the need for a third party.
This is the time we need to do to step up and become that third party in everyones minds. Most people I talk to are just as pissed off about the state of things today as we seem here. But when i tell them I have become a libertarian they are like a what?
What do we need to do to get these corrupt bastards out of office. Hell are there any honest ones left?
What do we need to do to get people back in office who care about those who elected them.
We have an oppurtunity to make a difference now.
But what can we do at a national level a state level and a local level.
This is our time this is our chance lets make a difference.

  2. go to portland and be a delegate. Vote for change wherever you see it. Get rid of the oath for rank and file, and put a stake into the current platform and kill it.

    that will be a start.

  3. Get rid of the politicians in the LP and replace them with some statesmen.

Unfortunately, some idiot scheduled the LP convention too close to PorcFest and on the other side of the country, and my finances will not permit me to attend both.

    So I’m going to PorcFest.

I suspect far more positive change will get accomplished at PorcFest than at the LP national convention.

  4. didn’t they already indict House Speaker Tom Delay?

can we use the RICO statutes on congress?

if Hastert is indicted that would be two alleged predicate acts by members of an organization, within ten years of each other.

  5. Obviously, there is a third party. The media’s refusal to actually talk it up says everything. Nothing is going to happen, blackouts etc. will continue. Nobody would look independent if they just kissed ass all the time. So they have to feign interest, without aiding the competition.

Mike Hampton, you are right on the money. Enjoy your trip, sir. Are you signed up?

  6. I’ve started reading Cybercast News Service because they (1) give the Libertarian Party coverage, and (2) as far as I can see, have a staff chock full of libertarians.

I signed up, but I haven’t booked everything yet. Probably will do it at the last minute like everyone else. :)

  7. The ABC report appears to have been seriously flawed; Justice Department says Hastert is not a target of the Abramoff investigation. (Per CNN, Washington Post and others over the last 6 hours…)
