Bush Wants To Expand Military Court Authorities

Yeah, this is no good.

A draft Bush administration plan for special military courts seeks to expand the reach and authority of such “commissions” to include trials, for the first time, of people who are not members of al-Qaeda or the Taliban and are not directly involved in acts of international terrorism, according to officials familiar with the proposal.

The plan, which would replace a military trial system ruled illegal by the Supreme Court in June, would also allow the secretary of defense to add crimes at will to those under the military court’s jurisdiction. The two provisions would be likely to put more individuals than previously expected before military juries, officials and independent experts said.

Once again, our Fearless Leader demonstrates his uncanny ability to turn chicken soup into chicken shit.

  1. Why do I get the feeling that my anti-war activities–or even my Mennonite beliefs–will be called a crime and fall under the jurisdiction of the military?

  2. Why haven’t the islamists taken to calling Danish pastry “rose of the prophet Mohammed” as reported on The Daily Show? It would be just as symbolically silly.

  3. Yeah, but what about people being held for over 3 years without even so much as a hearing. It would have been legal to await clarification on justice system – if it weren’t for the embarrassing fact that over 90% of those detained have not actually been charged with specific criminal activities.

  4. This is scarey stuff. How long till activists are considered to be “under the military court’s jurisdiction…”? I’m sure they’ll go after drug users first, however, ’cause they’re such an easy target and of course, drug users support terrorism. Next will be the protestors, activists and the like. Then what, political adversaries? Journalists? Is Bush singlehandedly trying to dismantle the Constitution and turn America into a facist police state? *shakes the magic 8-ball* “All signs point to Yes”

Could that lunatic who calls himself The Decider be deliberately trying to provoke a response which could give him the excuse to crack the whip down even harder on the We the People. God I hope not, but it seems like a distinct possibility to me. America is dying, friends. If this passes it will be one of the final nails in the coffin of what once was a free country.

  5. I’d love to see a nice big ad in U.S.A. Today about this manure, but at the least I hope the LP gets a news release out.
This SOB needs to be impeached and then arrested and tried for his crimes and upon conviction sentenced to cleaning the bed pans of those who have been injured by his acts for twelve hours a day seven days a week.
