Another Porker Abusing the Libertarian Label

Glenn McConnellSouth Carolina state senator Glenn McConnell may be a lot of things, but libertarian isn’t one of them (via Hit & Run):

You know what’s nice when you’re a state senator? What’s nice when you’re a state senator is that when you pick an expensive hobby, you can get taxpayers to foot the bill. In the case of South Carolina and senator Glenn McConnell, the tab is now 97 million dollars and counting.

[…] When McConnell, a Confederacy buff and Civil War reenactor (that’s him in the picture), started his pet project, he predicted that it would cost five to 10 million dollars, most of it to be financed with private donations. His high estimate turned out to be almost 90 million dollars off, and a local newspaper discovered that more than 85% of the cost will have to be borne by taxpayers.

The kicker? According to the same newspaper, “the 58-year-old McConnell [is] a libertarian who often criticizes government spending.”

Since it’s apparent now that both Democrats and Republicans have no qualms or shame about brazenly co-opting the libertarian meme these days, with some rather disastrous PR results when the submarine hits the reef (gee, libertarians are now racist, loudmouth sensationalist pundits and now, pork spenders… Joe Public must be impressed). I think we need to set the record straight on spendthrift asshats like this smearing the libertarian name.

So here’s an idea: email John Monk, writer of The State story and tell him real libertarians aren’t two-faced porkers wearing elephant lapel pins.

I've published HoT along with about 300+ friends since 2002. We're all Americans who are snarky and love our country. I'm a libertarian that registered Republican because I like to win elections. That's pretty much it.

  1. Yet one more reason why “libertarians” who desire to run for office run as Libertarians and not as crossovers to the BOYN Party. Better to lose than confuse.

  2. MRJarrell: If this guy wants to be called a libertarian, he’s free to actually act like one first. This is about messing with voter’s heads, which will cause us to lose if we don’t nip this kind of stuff bud.

  3. maybe there should be a libertarian PAC that does nothing but vigorously go after people who mislabel others or themselves as “libertarian”.

  4. Daniel — heh; try this one; “X”-wing. Like X & Y axis. Also like “Brand-X”.

    Another attempt at amusement.
