Schwarzenegger: Democrats are “Girlie Men”

I want to be a girlie man when I grow upTrue enough, Arnold Schwarzenegger actually called Democrat law-makers in California “girlie men.” The Associated Press reports in Democrats: Schwarzenegger comment sexist:

Schwarzenegger dished out the insult at a rally Saturday as he claimed Democrats were delaying the budget by catering to special interests. Democrats protested that the remark was sexist and homophobic.

“If they don’t have the guts to come up here in front of you and say, ‘I don’t want to represent you, I want to represent those special interests, the unions, the trial lawyers … if they don’t have the guts, I call them girlie men,” Schwarzenegger said to the cheering crowd at a mall food court in Ontario.

It’s funny that the Democrats are attacking Schwarzenegger on the grounds that the statement is “misogynist as it is anti-gay,” when the truth is more likely that Schwarzenegger has to resort to using old Saturday Night Live jokes because he doesn’t have the skill to debate with the law-makers. I don’t see the malice in him using the term (though the stupidity is readily apparent), and it’s clear that Democrats are reading more into this than there is. They should have simply responded that they were simply working to “pump up” the budget. Special interests are so “manly man” anyways.

Girlie Men teeUPDATE: Heretical Ideas points out that in today’s hyper-sensitive world, politicians can’t even make jokes anymore: “I guess the editors at the Chronicle never watched SNL during the brilliant early 90s seasons. Ah well–we can pump them up!”

ANOTHER UPDATE: Boing Boing points out that there is now a retro t-shirt emblazoned with the fictional team “Sacramento Girlie Men“. Now, while I said before that Arnold calling the Democrats girlie men did not jibe as gay, this shirt definitely would make the wearer an ass-clown.
