Bad News for Indiana Libertarians

I’m not sure what the outcome of this will be, but it appears that a computer glitch in Indiana voting machines has triggered an automatic recount. At the crux of the problem is the news that Democrats voting a straight Democrat ticket had their votes handed to Libertarian candidates. From the Indystar article Glitch causes Franklin Co. recount:

Election equipment counted straight-party votes for Democratic candidates as Libertarian votes, an error that could affect election outcomes in as many as nine counties, the Richmond Palladium-Item reported today.

Democrats discovered the error in Franklin County, where ballots will be counted again tonight.

The county’s election equipment vendor, Fidlar, notified officials Wednesday of the error.

Libertarian candidates received 7 to 8 percent of the votes in Franklin County, which is about 30 miles south of Richmond.

Looks like any celebrations in Indiana by Libertarian candidates in the margin of loss/win may have been premature. This will likely spark a recount investigation into Indiana’s presidential results as well, but with a 500K vote lead by Bush, it is unlikely to amount to much of a gain for Kerry.

I've published HoT along with about 300+ friends since 2002. We're all Americans who are snarky and love our country. I'm a libertarian that registered Republican because I like to win elections. That's pretty much it.
