My card, ironically, is right next to my Social Security card in my wallet.

I’ve been of the opinion for some time that our official colour shouldn’t be blue, but rather yellow. But I hope, if they do, that it’s not this school-bus yellow I’m seeing.

Many of those folks were just inquiries. So what? The LP was engaging in a well-known marketing principle that the DemReps use to great effect. Not only do I have all my LP cards, I also have a shload of D/R membership cards (national/state/and even a couple local).

Sending out relatively cheap membership cards is an effective trick and always has been. The Annual Report fundraisers were generally big-return mailings (over 100k IIRC).

I do not believe any of the renewal packages carried membership cards, but they could have — and if they did, it would have been a perfectly acceptable marketing method.

Professional marketing consultants will tell you that this is largely claptrap.

Membership cards by themselves generate mostly feelings of being a stakeholder in an organization. Which is why they can be an effective marketing tool.

I have been a member since about 1980.

Membership cards in the early eighties were spotty. You might have gotten one, or not. I keep every one in a business card notebook.

Here’s what they’ve been made of in the past:

PAPER: 1981, 981, 1983, 1984, 1985

PLASTIC: 1987, 1988. 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992

PLASTI-COTE PAPER: 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 199, 2000, 2001.

PLASTIC: 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005.

I believe some of the years I have plastic cards (after 2001), it may be because I’m a life member. As I recall, there were also plastic cards available throughout the nineties for people who donated at the Benefactor Life level or above.

Has anyone ever had occasion to show, or been asked for, his “LP membership card?”

Yes too.

In the past the LP sent out membership cards BEFORE people renewed! The cards were sent in the REQUEST to renew.

Fact check. Once a year the national LP (usually in January) sent out its “Annual Report” to every last name …

Although I would like to send them to everyone, it’s a big chunk of change that could be used to promote our Party. I also polled a few Life Members and everyone I spoke with already had a card and didn’t feel that it was necessary to go through the expense. If we do it in the future, we’ll tie it to a fundraiser.
