FreedomSLUT

thumb.jpgIt looks like Thomas Knapp has a new online project: FreedomSLUT. Here’s his description of the project:

What is freedomSLUT? Sites, Links, URLs and Tags — “social bookmarking,” a la del.icio.us, reddit, etc., only specifically for libertarian stuff.

Feel free to post links to your own pro-freedom bloggage, or stuff that you find while surfing. To make it easy, there’s a bookmarklet you can drag to your browser toolbar. If you’d like to set up your Blogger blog so that each post has a “post to freedomSLUT” link at the bottom of it, just pop the following code into the post footer section of your template:

[actual tag omitted]

What, you wanted porn? No dice. But here’s the graphic I’m using in ads for the site. No, I don’t know her — it was made from a stock photo.

My question to Tom, Brad and the crew is whether there is some easy way to automatically tag entries from other sites (such as this one), too.

Yeah that’s a great way to get everyone to take Libertarians seriously…

This kind of stuff needs to stop, it’s funny to us but it just makes us look like a bunch of immature kids.

I’m wondering how this isn’t just something where I could duplicate it in del.icio.us by tagging it “libertarian.”

Not to knock the idea, but it seems like something even someone savvy like myself would pass up because it’s already been done on a much larger scale on an already popular site.

On second glance, what FreedomSLUT is duplicating is this FURL page, not del.icio.us (which incidentally I might have to subscribe to via RSS now).

Maybe FreedomSLUT could be an aggregator of just recent links to all things tagged libertarian (pulling GoogleNews and other resources as well).

    Check the about page.

There are browser bookmarklets for easy posting from within your browser. Find them at the bottom of the Add Bookmark page once you’re logged in.

There’s also a Firefox extension available that’s supposed to make posting, but I haven’t tested it with this site yet. That extension is ScuttleliciousScuttle being the social bookmarking software used to build the site.

There are also options for importing your bookmarks directly from del.icio.us and Internet Explorer or Netscape bookmark files. Again, check the bottom of the Add Bookmark page.

Since Scuttle also implements most of the del.icio.us API, any tool developed for del.icio.us should work with freedomSLUT if it allows you to change the API address.

It’ll be interesting to see how this works out. The software is specifically designed to mimic del.icio.us (at least in terms of API).

Tom originally told me he wanted a social bookmarking site FOR libertarians and that’s what he got from me. Now he’s saying it’s specifically for libertarian STUFF. There is a distinction and the former seemed much more practical to me. As far as I’m concerned, the original idea was simply to draw libertarians closer together as a community, so I have no problem with people posting gardening tips, tech info, pr0n, scholarly dissertations on music history or links to funny pet pictures. I will defer to Tom in these matters, though.

“…whether there is some easy way to automatically tag entries from other sites”

Sure, with other blog software other than Blogger, you basically just want to add links to the following URL format:

    http://freedomslut.com/bookmarks.php?action=add&address=URL&title=TITLE

Where [URL] and [TITLE] are the particular URL and title for the item in question (such as a blog post). So in the case of this blog, you would replace them with the appropriate WordPress template variables (which I will not try to name in this comment, for fear it may create bad database mojo or get munged and just appear confusing).

    Brad,

I see you’ve plugged the browser bookmarklets, so I’ll just poke at distinction that I didn’t realize existed:

“Tom originally told me he wanted a social bookmarking site FOR libertarians and that’s what he got from me. Now he’s saying it’s specifically for libertarian STUFF. There is a distinction and the former seemed much more practical to me.”

I hadn’t considered the possibility that the latter excluded the former. I guess I’ve got a cultist mentality, as I just assumed that libertarians going to a site for libertarians, would want to read, and would post, stuff related to libertarianism.

I’ll have to skull s’more, but I see your point.

Yes, tags/watchlists can be used at del.icio.us et al to make finding “libertarian stuff” easy. What I want (and now have) is a place where libertarians don’t have to sort through stuff and hope that the good stuff got the “libertarian” tag … because it’s a libertarian SITE.

Semper Gumby, of course. It will become what it becomes.

    Stephen,

“Not to knock the idea, but it seems like something even someone savvy like myself would pass up because it’s already been done on a much larger scale on an already popular site.”

“Libertarianism” is being done in much more popular parties than the LP (see “Republican Liberty Caucus” and “Democratic Freedom Caucus”), but there’s a difference between being a site (or party) with some libertarian content (or members) and being a libertarian site (or party).

I notice that you’re blogging at HoT and launching LibertyMix rather than just joining the Little Green Footballs blog team and mixing it up at FreeRepublic as a libertarian. There’s a reason for that, right?

    Regards,
    Tom

“I’m wondering how this isn’t just something where I could duplicate it in del.icio.us by tagging it “libertarian.”

Well, the problem with that is, the libertarian tag at del.icio.us isn’t then subdivided into libertarian war, libertarian politics, libertarian news, libertarian economics etc etc. And neither is the FURL site. I can also just google ‘libertarian news’ every day.

I think SLUT is a good idea, it has a few bugs in it (which I’m sure will be worked out)… I’m keeping my gardening tags and such over on del.icio.us for now, though, until SLUT comes up with a way to ‘bundle’ tags like delly does.
